World’s best tourist attractions get slated in TripAdvisor reviews
Looking to book your next holiday? A little bit of pre-departure Googling can help to inform the attractions you visit whilst you’re there – and importantly, help you avoid any no-gos.
But even some of the world’s most famous, most-loved attractions can’t win everyone over.
Analysis of TripAdvisor reviews has found that many tourists were less than impressed with their once-in-a-lifetime trips to famous sights.
Ben Nevis in Scotland, the highest mountain in the UK, attracts over 130,000 visitors each year. The 700-metre cliff tops form some of the highest in Scotland.
But some hikers weren’t thrilled by the lack of mod cons on the mountain top… yes, really.
‘The Wi-Fi is a joke. Couldn’t log onto TikTok or Instagram,’ they argued. ‘This is the 21st century and they can’t even install a phone mast at the top? PATHETIC.’
The Statue of Liberty in New York has already recieved some scathing reviews.
One of the most famous tourist attractions in the city, it gathers approximately 4.4 million visitors each year. Visitors can take a ferry out to Liberty Island and marvel at the symbol of freedom and democracy.
Tripadvisor’s best attractions for your next UK staycation
For a more enjoyable holiday experience than some of these disgruntled reviewers, in 2023, Tripadvisor announced some of the must-visit experiences in the UK as part of its Travellers’ Choice Awards.
Taking 12 months of review data into account, the platform ranked the top 10 overall experiences as follows:
- Historical Pub Walking Tour of London, London
- High-Speed Thames River Cruise, London
- The Chocolatarium Chocolate Tour Experience, Edinburgh
- Tour for Muggles, London
- Famous Black Taxi Tours Belfast, Belfast
- Celtic Park Stadium Tour, Glasgow
- Oxford University Walking Tour With University Alumni Guide, Oxford
- The Jack The Ripper Walking Tour, London
- West End Musicals Silent Disco Walking Tour, London
- Gander Walking Tours in Glasgow, Glasgow.
But one visitor reduced it to ‘just a statue in the middle of the water, not as big as we thought.
‘It’s also very expensive to go nearby it, so a trip there isn’t worth the money really.’
Likewise, another towering attraction struggled to win everyone over – London’s Big Ben, no less.

One reviewer joked that it was ‘just a big clock really init,’ writing: ‘Nothing special really could just go to my nan’s house and see a clock except Big Ben’s 10x bigger.’
A tough crowd to please, the Great Wall of China was hilariously branded ‘too old,’ ‘terrible’ and a ‘shambles.’ The World Heritage Site dates back 2,000 years, and attracts an impressive 10 million people each year.
And, finally, eShores also found that the Tower of London struggled in the face of its critics. Dating back almost 1,000 years, it was the place were the likes of Anne Boleyn, Lady Jane Grey and Guy Fawkes were held before they lost their heads, and also houses the Crown Jewels.
One visitor, however, reported feeling ‘ripped off, royally’ as the Crown Jewels remained absent as part of the 2023 Coronation of King Charles III, or as they described it, ‘the king thing.’
